The Alzipratu Estate
Know-how
Wines of character in Corsica
Each week, we'll be taking you on a gastronomic tour of Corsica... Today, we invite you to discover the "Alzipratu" estate.
Located 8 km south of Calvi between Calenza and Zilia, facing the Monte Grossu cirque, the Alzipratu estate enjoys a Mediterranean climate contrasted by the influence of the nearby mountains. The 30-hectare vineyard is planted with traditional grape varieties on granitic arena soils, and follows environmentally-friendly growing methods. The result is wines that reflect a genuine typicity.
It was the father of Pierre Acquaviva, the current owner, who created the estate in 1974 in partnership with Baron de la Grange. Baron de la Grange, owner of the small Alzipratu vineyard, developed the winery and vinification alongside Maurice Acquaviva. His son Pierre took over the running of the winery in 1991.
Pierre Acquaviva, a winemaker here for over a quarter of a century, took over the family estate from his father Maurice some fifteen years ago, and in an island where wine tourism is still often limited to the opening of a cellar, Pierre likes to share his love of Corsica, Balagne, its vines and its wines.
Today, the domaine is renowned for its production of red wines from the nielluccio, sciaccarello and grenache grapes grown on the estate, and for its white wines, made from vermentino and bianco gentile vines.
Domaine Alzipratu invites you to taste its wines in the sales cellar, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 6pm. We also offer a sensory tour (reservation required), including a visit to the vineyard and cellars, followed by a tasting of 5 wines paired with 5 dishes from Corsican gastronomy.
