Cateri
Village of Balagne
With its exceptional panoramic views and historic monuments, Cateri is one of Balagne's most popular mountain villages...
The history
Although Cateri developed considerably during the Middle Ages (with, in particular, a high level of agricultural activity and the creation of numerous religious buildings - towers, chapels, churches...), its origins go back much further in time, since excavations at the Carcu and Modria archaeological sites point to occupation 2300 years before present.
In fact, a 2000-year-old olive tree still stands on the site! It's undoubtedly the oldest olive tree on the Isle of Beauty, which lends a touch of magic to this little commune already known as one of the most beautiful "balcony" villages in the Balagne region.
The village
It's impossible not to fall under its spell!
The old granite houses (with exposed stonework), the vaulted passageways in the cobbled streets, the rows of olive trees... and, of course, all those buildings, each more magnificent than the last! We could spend all our time describing them, but the best thing to do is to see them for yourself... Special mention must go to the Benedictine convent of Marcassu (built on the ruins of a castle) and the baroque parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its arcaded absidal bell tower, unique in Corsica, and its magnificent frescoes!
To round off your stroll, what better way to enjoy a moment out of time than on the "piazzetta" overlooking the sea?
