Montegrosso
Village of Balagne
This small Balagne village, nestled on a mountainside, owes its name to the Monte-Grosso massif that dominates it, offering exceptional panoramic views over the Gulf of Calvi. The commune was originally three typical villages: Lunghignano, Cassano and Montemaggiore, which have now merged.
What to see
Despite its small size, Montegrosso boasts a rich heritage, including Roman remains and several religious buildings:
- Church of San Raineru
- Church of Saint Vitus
- Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua
- Church of St. Anthony Abbot
- Chapel of the Confraternity of St. John
- Chapel of Don Juan
As you stroll through the village, you'll discover its narrow streets lined with stone houses, and admire their doors surrounded by their original stone carvings, as well as the period wash-house.
At the end of the day, you can admire the sunset between land and sea.
Event
On the third weekend in July, Montegrosso organizes the "Fiera di l'Alivu".
First and foremost, it's a festival celebrating the olive tree, but it's also a place for meetings and exchanges with French and European olive growers and technicians. It has also opened up to other local productions: craftsmen, potters, ironworkers, basketmakers, cabinetmakers, cutlers, sculptors, cheese-makers, pastry-makers, beekeepers, pork butchers and wine-makers. There are also storytellers, historians, painters and musicians.
