Muro
Village of Balagne
At the foot of the imposing Monte Grosso (1937 meters above sea level), in the heart of the pleasant Regino valley, lies the charming little village of Muro and its exceptional church, Santissima Annunziata...
The history
It was during the Middle Ages, when Corsica was occupied by the Moors, that Muro really came into being. Its name, Muru, comes from an ancient Moorish citadel called Muru Vecchiu.
A few centuries later, to combat the Saracen threat and malaria, the inhabitants decided to isolate themselves in the mountains.
It was a choice that paid off, as by the middle of the 19th century, the village was thriving, thanks in particular to the cultivation of olive trees (as well as almond, chestnut and cherry trees).
At that time, Muro had a population of 1,500... compared with just over 230 today.
The village
Muro is dominated by the magnificent Santissima Annunziata church, one of the prettiest on the Isle of Beauty.
Another of the commune's assets is its proximity to the hamlets of Poggiali and Murato, places steeped in history.
