Nessa
Village of Balagne
A charming little mountain village, Nessa is well known to hikers and nature lovers...
History
When we think of Corsica, we immediately think of Bastia, Ajaccio, Porto-Vecchio or Calvi. Rarely Nessa...
Yet it was in this pretty little village that the famous Gregorio Salvini was born, author of a landmark work for the Isle of Beauty: "Giustificazione della rivoluzione di Corsica".
In the 18th century, this manifesto denounced the cases of bad justice and maladministration perpetrated by the occupying Genoese authorities, which continually victimized Corsican communes. It was of considerable importance, serving as the basis for the independence movement's fight against Genoa. No more, no less!
The village
Located on the border of the Corsican Natural Park, Nessa has a rare feature: the village is split in two!
To the north, you'll find the vast majority of dwellings (mostly tall, imposing houses), the magnificent ecclesiastical monuments and the rows of olive and chestnut trees that line the commune.
To the south, the (high) mountains await you, and there's no doubt you'll find hikers in search of fresh air and exhilarating sensations...
