Speloncato
Village of Balagne
Between the plains and the mountains, Speloncato is a commune apart in the Balinese landscape. The result of a rich history for this unique and beautiful village...
The history
To think of Speloncato's origins is to take a trip back in time, an odyssey that stretches back centuries and begins in Neolithic times (remains dating back to this period have been found).
The plain was populated from the Bronze Age onwards, before the Roman Empire built thermal baths. Then, with the barbarian invasions and the occupation of the Genoese, the inhabitants, seeking protection, moved to the heights.Speloncato's heyday was between the 17th and 19th centuries, when the village grew wheat and olives and boasted a population of over 1,000!
The village
Exceptionally, Speloncato boasts two churches (Santa Catalina and Santa Maria Assunta)! This pretty little hilltop village also boasts exceptional views over the Regino valley and the coastline. To top it all off, the village is on the Route of the Authentic Senses. Olive oil, goat's cheese, wines... So many nectars to sample on an unforgettable journey...
