Pigna
Village of Balagne
Authentic yet modern, Pigna is the cultural symbol of the Balagne region. A unique village with a rich history and exceptional architecture...
The history
Born in 862, in the heart of the Middle Ages, Pigna has been strongly influenced by this period. This is easy to see when you have the chance to visit this magnificent village.
But Pigna was also influenced by the Renaissance and the Genoese occupation. In fact, that's where its name comes from (Pigna means "Wheatstone"), at a time when Haute-Corse was a rich agricultural and craft region.
In the late 1960s, the Corsicada cooperative association set out to revive this mix of traditions. Potters, sculptors and stringed-instrument makers came to the commune to practice their art and renovate the village using ancestral techniques. All to restore the village to its former glory...
The result is exceptional. Pigna has become the perfect reflection of the history of the Balagne region...
The village
A mountain village suspended on rocky outcrops, Pigna overlooks the beautiful Nervia valley, and is easily recognizable by its magnificent blond houses with azure shutters. You'll love strolling through its cobbled streets and visiting its late 18th-century Italian-style church. A little paradise on earth, where cars are forbidden and you'll simply be lulled by the bewitching sound of craftsmen at work.
